Skinny Mini

Who can forget the iconic episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians when Kanye banished Kim from wearing the classic oversized sunglasses? Kim explained "He sent me a whole email like, 'You cannot wear big glasses anymore. It's all about tiny little glasses’”. Kanye, ever the fashion dictator was right of course. The micro-trend took the fashion sphere by storm. Tiny-sunglasses peeked at you from the tip of every style star’s nose, and micro-bags spotted on the arm of every it-girl. Poppy Lissiman’s ‘Le Skinny’ trademarked the mini cat-eye silhouette and received nods of approval from a slew of trendsetting celebrities. You’re bound to be spoilt for choice with the range of candy-coloured hues to choose from. Balenciaga also jumped on the mini, introducing a futuristic twist on opaque black sunglasses—not unlike the pair Trinity wore in The Matrix. Throw these on for a sleek touch to your everyday outfit.  For those who prefer rounder shapes, don’t fret, they come in micro-form too. Gentle Monster’s ‘Vector’ features a narrow, oval frame finished with a tinted lens. The trendy retro frames are a popular model, as seen on both Hadid sisters, who have proven to be eyewear-connoisseurs with their impeccable choices.

Supersize Me!

The maxi may have just engulfed our appetite for the mini, from Kylie’s iconic ginormous straw hat, Dior’s long-lusted-over travel beach bag and the return of Bottega’s chunky arm candy, it may be true that bigger, the better. After all, Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie and Lindsay Lohan loved face-shielding shades, and who are we to argue with the original style icons? Jacquemus’ ‘Les Carres Rivera’ is the epitome of carefree holiday spirit. Featuring flat, square, tinted lenses—the frameless glasses are a fun, retro take on the oversized. Dior’s ‘Dior So Light’ is a statement piece, to say the least. Undoubtedly the biggest pair on the list, these oversized sunnies feature an enormous bold square frame, which not only delivers on style but is bound to provide excellent protection as well. If you’re one to opt for the more classic look, Celine’s ‘Original’ sunglasses are a necessary staple. A favourite of the Olsen twins, (who, as we all know, are undetachable from their shades even on the front rows of fashion shows) the timeless, square silhouette is accentuated with the label’s signature triple-dot hardware on the sides. Pair them with a chunky roll-neck sweater to finish off your look.

It has been years since Kanye showcased his shutter shade sunglasses, but odd shapes and funky numbers are still alive and thriving. We don’t like to play favourites, but this might just be our favourite pair on the list. Loewe’s chunky, retro frames from their Paula Ibiza line are crafted from acetate and available in countless rainbow shades. Small, oval lenses are embedded into the rectangular frame, creating a playful contrast between round and angular silhouettes. If Lolita was written in this century, we have no doubt she would swap her red heart-shaped sunnies for Saint Laurent’s ‘LouLou’, the elevated, high fashion iteration. With a titled cat-eye silhouette, these shades give off glamour and confidence. Vetements is known for their bold designs and mischievous theatrics, their take on sunglasses is the very epitome of quirky. In collaboration with Oakly, their futuristic shades blend sporty with punk, featuring reflective, iridescent lenses, and dotted by spikes around the frame. If you ever find yourself dirt biking in the day and heading to a rave at night, these shades will take you from one to the other with ease.

Rich Metals

Chrome Hearts is synonymous with the biker-chic aesthetic, it’s only right that their eyewear falls in line with their rebellious, luxe style. Their SS20 collection features an array of elegant titanium frames, with an edge of rock star detailing. Classic shapes are embellished with gold accents and their signature gothic charms. If you have a penchant for metal frames and luxury detailing, this is for you. A brand renowned for its rich history and top of the line craftsmanship, Cartiers sunglasses reflect their eye for elegance and modern design. ‘Santos de Cartier' are a slim, rectangular silhouette, featuring brushed gold-tone metal frames and accentuated with the label’s iconic screws—the epitome of opulence and class. Thom Brown have established themselves as a staple high-end piece to own. The ‘Mirrored Aviator’ sunglasses feature a dark-grey metal frame and finished with their signature red and white motif on the arm tips.
